Troop 77 - San Jacinto, NASA, & Galveston Island State Park Adventure

When: Thursday, April 20, 2000 through Saturday, April 22, 2000
Where: Galveston Island State Park, Galveston, Texas (409-737-1222). Visit San Jacinto battleground, San Jacinto Monument, USS Texas, and NASA.  Route: See Daily Schedules below.
Purpose:

Our purpose is to:

  1. Have a Scouting adventure by visiting historic sites
  2. Build Patrol teamwork
  3. Work on advancement requirements
Cost: $10 per person for campsites.  Bring your own food (see Food section below).  If you want to visit the "attractions" there is extra cost (see Daily Schedules below).
Equipment: You will need gear for COLD weather.  Remember our Griffith League Ranch campout!  "Be prepared" for wet weather.  You will probably want a camera also.

Page 204 for cold weather clothing
Page 224 for your personal overnight gear
Page 226 for Patrol gear
Food: Bring your own food and snacks.  The Patrol / Buddy system will be used for Scouts.  Adult advisors are on their own.  You will need two "picnic" lunches for San Jacinto battleground on Thursday and NASA on Friday.  Pack your Thursday lunch where it can be easily reached.

Patrols / Buddies: Plan your cooking to satisfy Second and First Class rank requirements.

Daily Schedules:

Thursday, April 20
7:30 a.m. Meet at JRS Exxon convenience store, FM 1431 & Lohman Ford Rd.  Travel in uniform.
8:00 a.m. Depart.  Route:  East on FM 1431 to Cedar Park, south on US 183 to Austin, east on TX 71 to Altair, east on US Alt. 90 to Houston, east on I-610 (South Loop Frwy), east on TX 225 (La Porte Frwy), north on TX 134 (Battleground Rd) to San Jacinto.
12:00 noon Arrive at San Jacinto battleground.  Lunch.
12:30 p.m. Tour sights.  Extra costs:
Admission to battleground is free
Monument: Elevator to top - $3.00;  Audiovisual drama - $3.50
Battleship Texas: Scouts - $3.00, Adults - $5.00
4:00 p.m. Depart for Galveston.  Route:  South on TX 134, west on TX 225 (La Porte Frwy), south on TX 8 (E. Sam Houston Pkwy), south on I-45 to Galveston, south on TX 342 (61st St.), west on FM 3005 to Galveston Island State Park.
5:00 p.m. Arrive at Galveston Island State Park.  Proceed to campsites and set up camp.  We have three campsites reserved with water and electricity.  Each Patrol has its own campsite and one campsite is for adults. 
5:30 p.m. Supper
7:30 p.m. Campfire (Wolf Pack)
9:00 p.m. Quiet time
10:00 p.m. Taps. All in tents. Park silence rule.

Friday, April 21

6:30 a.m. Reveille
6:45 a.m. Breakfast
7:45 a.m. Patrol Leaders & Assistant Patrol Leaders inspect camp.
8:00 a.m. Colors (Wolf Pack)
8:30 a.m. Depart for NASA.
9:30 a.m. Arrive at NASA.  Extra costs:
Admission to movie & tour - $13.95 per person
12:00 noon Lunch
2:30 p.m. Depart for camp
3:30 p.m. Arrive at camp
5:30 p.m. Supper
6:30 p.m. Colors (Wolf Pack)
7:30 p.m. Campfire (Ravens)
9:00 p.m. Quiet time

Saturday, April 22

1:15 p.m. Depart.  Route:  East on FM 3005, north on TX 342, north on I-45, take Exit 7, 7A-B onto TX 6 and go northwest to Sugarland, west on US Alt. 90 to Altair, west on TX 71, north on US 183, west on FM 1431.
5:00 p.m. Arrive home
